About the Scholarship

The University of Canberra Research Scholarship provides research study opportunities for domestic and international students who wish to undertake Higher Degree by Research studies. The scholarship is administered by the University's Graduate Research team, with awards determined through a competitive academic ranking process.

The scholarship provides a tax-free annual stipend of $36,225 to support living expenses. Eligible international students may also receive tuition fee sponsorship, while international students commencing from outside Australia may have their stipend back-paid after arriving at the University's Bruce campus.

Eligibility Criteria

• Be an international or domestic student.
• Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, New Zealand citizen, or international student, as applicable.
• Not have previously held an Australian Government-funded research scholarship for more than six months.
• Meet the University's admission requirements for the relevant Higher Degree by Research programme.
• Priority may be given to applicants approved for PhD admission with an Australian First-Class Honours qualification or an equivalent qualification.
• Priority may be given to applicants holding a Master's qualification with a research project comprising at least 25% of the programme and a result of at least 80, where considered equivalent by the University.
• Priority may be given to current PhD candidates who have completed Confirmation of Candidature and have less than two years of candidature remaining at the start of the semester.
• Priority may be given to applicants approved for the National Industry PhD Program – Industry Linked stream.
• Priority may be given to Indigenous Australian applicants approved for PhD admission.

5. Applications are assessed for completeness, eligibility and admission requirements.
6. Eligible applications are forwarded to the relevant faculties for academic assessment and ranking.
7. Applicants are ranked based on factors including academic qualifications, research proposal, research experience and strategic alignment.
8. The University Research Scholarship Committee makes the final scholarship allocations based on the order of merit.
