Professional Fellowships are designed for mid-career professionals seeking to strengthen their expertise through professional development at a UK host organisation. Academic Fellowships are intended for university academic staff who hold a PhD and want to update their academic skills, exchange knowledge, build networks, and develop future international collaborations. Fellowships last between six weeks and three months and are expected to contribute to development that creates a positive impact when Fellows return home.

Eligibility Criteria

• Applicants must be citizens of, or have refugee status in, an eligible Commonwealth country, or be British Protected Persons.
• Applicants must be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.
• Applicants must not have indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
• Professional Fellowship applicants must have at least five years of relevant full-time or equivalent part-time professional experience by the proposed fellowship start date.
• Voluntary work does not count toward the five-year professional experience requirement.
• Academic Fellowship applicants must hold a PhD.
• Academic Fellowship applicants must be employed by a university in an eligible Commonwealth country other than the UK.
• Applicants must be employed at the time of application by an organisation they intend to return to after the fellowship.
• Applicants must provide at least two references, including one from their current employer.
• Applicants must not have undertaken a Commonwealth Fellowship within the previous five years at the time of taking up the award.
• Applicants must be available to begin the fellowship on the prescribed start date.

• Statement of up to 500 words describing voluntary activities and leadership experience.

• Employment history and an explanation of how each position relates to the proposed fellowship.
• Statement of up to 300 words explaining the relevance of previous work experience to the proposed fellowship.
• Details of up to three suitable referees.
• Reference from the applicant’s current employer.
