The ARES Scholarship provides international students and professionals from selected partner countries with opportunities to pursue eligible advanced bachelor's or master's programmes and short continuing education courses in Belgium. The programme supports academic study and professional development in fields related to development at higher education institutions within the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

About the Scholarship

The ARES Scholarship offers international students and professionals from selected partner countries the opportunity to pursue eligible advanced bachelor's or master's programmes, as well as short continuing education courses, at higher education institutions within the Wallonia-Brussels Federation of Belgium. The programme is designed to support academic and professional development in areas related to development.

Supported fields include health, agriculture, information technology, economics, food technology, environmental studies, international development, human rights, aquaculture, GIS, and microfinance. Scholarship recipients can receive support for international travel, living expenses, insurance, and, where applicable, tuition fees and visa-related costs. Bachelor's and specialised master's scholarships can last up to 12 months, while continuing education awards can last up to six months.

Eligibility Criteria

• Be a permanent resident and professional working in one of the 32 eligible countries, except Palestinian applicants who may qualify regardless of their country of residence.
• Hold a relevant higher education degree and satisfy the admission requirements of the selected programme.
• Have obtained the relevant degree no more than 20 years before the start of the programme.
• The 20-year degree limit may be extended by one year for each childbirth or adoption.
• Have at least two years of relevant professional experience in an eligible country between completing the most recent graduate degree and the application deadline.
• Complete the application in the language of instruction of the selected programme.
• Demonstrate good written and spoken proficiency in the programme's language.
• Apply for only one ARES programme.

How to Apply

2. Visit the official ARES scholarship application platform.
3. Create and validate a GIRAF account if you do not already have one.
4. Log in to your GIRAF account.
5. Go to “Competitive Calls” and select “Application – International Training 2027–2028.”
6. Complete the application form and save it as a draft if you need to continue later.
7. Review all information and required fields before submitting.
8. Click “Submit my application” once the application is complete.
9. Check “Competitive Calls” > “My Submitted Applications” to confirm that your application has been submitted.
